Trauma can deeply affect a person’s emotional and physical well-being. It often leads to symptoms like anxiety, depression, anger, guilt, or numbness, and can disrupt daily functioning. People may struggle with intrusive memories, nightmares, flashbacks, or a sense of constant danger. Trauma can also often leave people feeling stuck and alter one’s view of the world, leading to feelings of mistrust, isolation, or a loss of self-esteem.
Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is a therapy designed to help individuals who experienced trauma and PTSD by addressing the impact of trauma, including unhelpful thoughts and beliefs that arise after trauma. It focuses on identifying "stuck points," or conflicting thoughts about the self and the world, and challenging them through evidence-based techniques. CPT helps individuals reframe negative thoughts, process traumatic memories, and develop healthier ways of thinking about their experiences, leading to emotional healing and improved coping.
